Captains Climb Update

08 November 2010

Our intrepid Service Manager Steve Jones has achieved his ambition to reach the top of Kilimanjaro in support of lung cancer research and has returned aching and weary but with a beaming smile on his face.

Steve received a lot of support for his efforts and to date has raised nearly £15,500 from family and friends and also from several generous companies associated with Design Environmental.

Steve would like to once again, thank all those who supported him.

Prior to embarking on his epic journey Steve and the other participants spent many hours in training and also acclimatising themselves to altitude in a Design Environmental hypoxic sports science room located within the University of Glamorgan.

It made a change for Steve to be on the receiving end of a piece of equipment that he has worked on many times but never before, been able to really appreciated what it felt like to be inside when its operating at its full potential . We understand that all participants found it an invaluable experience and insight into what they would have to deal with when they did it for real.

Design Environmental is proud to have supported Steve and we hope that perhaps one our products played a small part in helping him and others achieve their worthy goal.

Design Environmental is once again pleased to have supported the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at Aberystwyth University by providing an award to the student who achieved the highest mark for their dissertation.

Aberystwyth University had a custom designed, temperature controlled sport science room installed several years ago, which has played a vital role for all students at the Department of Sport and Exercise Science and we hope in some small way helped Sheree with her outstanding achievement.

We wish her continued success with her future career.

25th Anniversary

21 June 2010

On 30th August 2010 Design Environmental Ltd will be celebrating 25 years in the business of designing and manufacturing environmental test chambers. The company has developed over the last 25 years from a concept based in Kent, England to a UK market leader within the Schunk/Weiss Group.

Design Environmental was founded in 1985 with the prime objective of designing, manufacturing and servicing a range of standard and customised environmental test chambers and rooms, which provide accurately controlled temperature and humidity test conditions.

To meet the expansion plans for the company, in April 1989 the business was relocated to a 1,000m² purpose built factory on the Rassau Ind Estate, Ebbw Vale, South Wales, UK.

Design Environmental was purchased by Schunk/Weiss in 1998 and were proud to become part of the largest group of environmental test equipment manufacturers in the World and one, which has always been a pioneer in the industry.

The site in South Wales has brought a valued manufacturing base in the UK to the Weiss group who has shown great commitment in supporting the company and overseeing its continued success and expansion.

Design Environmental enjoys an excellent workforce, many of whom have been with the company since the move to South Wales in 1989.

Steady growth in the company through development of a customised and standard range of test chamber solutions has also meant a growth in the numbers employed and an apprenticeship scheme is in place to pass on knowledge from the skilled design and manufacturing staff to the workforce of the future. The company believes in growing talent from within wherever possible.

Turnover has grown steadily year on year and the customer base although mainly in the UK, sometimes stretches throughout the rest of the World. In 2008 DEL doubled its production facility to approximately 2,000m² to meet demand and at the same time created additional jobs to take the number employed to a total of 55.

Since Design Environmental was formed the majority of equipment has been supplied to Aerospace, Automotive and Electronics companies. In more recent years, as the company's reputation has spread, the customer base has expanded into many more sectors including pharmaceuticals, food and particularly higher education where we have established a reputation as a provider of Exercise and Sports Science rooms to Universities and sporting institutions.

As a major provider of customised environmental test solutions new challenges present themselves on a regular basis and the company intends to carry on rising to meet those challenges and to continue as a market leader throughout the next 25 years and beyond.

We would like to thank all of our customers, past, present and future for their support and assure them all of our best attention at all times.

Design Environmental Supports Kilimanjaro Climb

13 May 2010

On 6 September 2010 Design Environmental will be supporting, our well known service manager Steve (the fridge) Jones who will be taking part in the SA Brains Captains Climb. The climb will raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre's Stepping Stones Appeal, which will support lung cancer research.

Steve will be in the company of 15 Welsh rugby captains and Welsh rugby coach Warren Gatland as they attempt to climb to the Roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.

At 19,340ft Kilimanjaro is the continents highest peak as well as being the tallest freestanding volcano in the world!

Steve will be walking for approximately 6-7 hours a day and at some points in temperatures as low as -25°C.

As part of his rigorous training regime he, along with other members of the expedition, will undergo training and altitude simulation in a Design Environmental sports science room installed at the University of Glamorgan.

The room, which has recently undergone refurbishment by DEL is able to provide hypoxic conditions (depleted Oxygen) to simulate altitude up to 4500m, along with the temperature extremes to match.

This vital training will acclimatize their bodies to the altitude in advance and prepare them for the experience of pushing themselves to the limit with limited Oxygen.

Design Environmental believe this is a worthwhile cause and will be offering our financial and moral support.

If you would like to support Steve, either as an individual or as a company with a donation of any size please go to:
